The raid came after some customers complained about the store for selling its high-end leather shoes, bags and wallets at arbitrary prices.

The next time you go to a multinational outlet to purchase high-end designer or luxury items, check the price carefully. The price tag of an item could in fact be fraud on the part of a store.

One such fraud was foiled by the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) during a raid on an Italian multinational luxury leather goods retail store in Lower Parel on Wednesday. Officials seized items worth Rs 1 crore from the store.

The raid came after some customers complained about the store for selling its high-end leather shoes, bags and wallets at arbitrary prices.

LMD director Amitabh Gupta said a decoy customer was sent to the store for a reality check. “All of the items in the store had expensive price tags, which is common for such outlets,” Gupta said, adding that the lowest retail price for a pair of shoes was Rs 30,000. . The customer selected a pair of shoes priced at Rs 4.18 lakh. He asked the store to show the price declared to customs when importing.

“The price declaration is mandatory on each packaged product, as well as the month and year of import (in the case of foreign brands). The statement is made to protect the customer from arbitrary prices. These requirements were found to be incomplete in the items sold in the store, ”Gupta said.

When store managers could not provide valid reasons for the price charged for the items, the department seized the items on display and filed an action against the store under Rule 6 (1) of the Rules on packaged products of the law on legal metrology.

Gupta said the total price of the seized items was over Rs 1 crore, of which a sample of goods worth around 5 lakh was taken into possession for verification with the customs department. “We are free to put any retail price on imported items, but only after having informed the customs service of the import price. We will check the price declaration with customs, ”Gupta added.

Meanwhile, a source said the LMD will conduct a series of raids on these multinational retail stores and check to see if they are following the price reporting rules.
