New role: In December 2020, Julianna revealed that she had joined the cast of the hit Apple TV series The Morning Show. Last week, Margulies debuted in the third episode of the show’s second season.

The Morning Show was scheduled to return for the second season in November 2020, but production was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Julianna plays openly gay veteran journalist Laura Peterson, who is interviewing her sometimes rival Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston) when Alex unexpectedly returns as co-anchor of the morning show.

Peterson had already been fired from her position at the show’s fictional network UBA when she was fired in the 1990s.

Fans of the show were stunned when Laura and co-host Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) engaged in a steamy makeup session in the back of a car near the end of the episode.

In an interview with Vulture, Margulies described creating the scene with Witherspoon, who also serves as the show’s producer. In the scene, Bradley surprised Laura by unexpectedly kissing her as Laura questioned Bradley about how she got hired on The Morning Show.

Julianna told Vulture: “That kiss was an interesting moment, because Reese said ‘wait, as a producer’ and pointed out that if she leans forward and kisses me without permission, that’s harassment, and our whole show is based on the Me Too movement.

“So she said, ‘How can we make this scene work so it doesn’t seem hypocritical? And I said, “You’re right, you know, if you lean back like, oh my God, I’m so sorry, and I lean back and say, no, I liked that, then that’s a consensual kiss.” Then the scene became something different.

She went on to say, “I know people are probably going to be shocked. I know Bradley kissed her because she wouldn’t answer the question. But how they deal with the repercussions of that is truly fascinating.

The two actresses had never worked together before, but Julianna explained that she congratulated Reese on the success of Big Little Lies when they met at an event.

“I said, ‘I just want to congratulate you and welcome you to my world of television. And she said to me, “I had no idea how great television is for women!” And I thought, “I’ve been waiting for you all to come!”

Julianna, who shot to fame in the 1990s when she played Carol Hathaway on NBC’s long-running medical drama ER, said she also had a past connection with Aniston. The stars filmed ER and Friends in soundstages facing each other.

She said: ‘We were laughing about it, 25 years later – even though someone corrected me and said, ’27 years later’, and I was like, f**k! – it seems so long ago, but it doesn’t seem like it.

“We were shot down at the exact same time, on that Thursday night lineup,” Julianna continued. “We started together as no-name actresses and within one night of our broadcast, our worlds changed.

“Then to be back on a lot of things, not just on the same stage, but with our trailers side by side, that was really good. It felt like a celebration of women who are aging and still appreciated for the work we do.
