Almost exactly a year ago, Phoebe Bridgers released the most zeitgeisty music video of 2020: a music video for her single “Savior Complex”, directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and starring Normal people‘s Paul Mescal – accompanied by a Little Instagram-famous Chihuahua named Charlotte. Bridgers and Mescal first logged in on Twitter after the former made her way through the tearful adaptation of the BBC’s Sally Rooney, quickly tweeting: “Done Normal people and now I’m sad and excited – oh wait… ”Mescal’s immediate response? “I am officially dead.”

The exchange quickly led to a blossoming friendship – and this video collaboration. “He tackled it,” said Bridgers Vogue to work together creatively at the time. “He said, ‘I’m a fan of you, let’s do something cool.’ And he told me about the Rolling Stones video [Mescal starred in “Scarlet”], and then I brought it to Phoebe and she was like, yeah it’s too coincidental not to, the fact that I told you to watch Normal people and now you are friends.

Twelve months later, the couple officially beat Charlotte at her own game, breaking Instagram by making their relationship official. Bridgers shared a windswept image of the pair in matching all-black outfits on a cold beach, with Mescal wearing a Prada anorak that distinctly feels Timothée Chalamet. The post comes shortly after the twenties made their red carpet debut together at the LACMA Art + Film 2021 gala. And for all those girls leaving ‘it should’ve been me’ style messages in comments ? Maybe just get into your feelings while listening to Bridgers’ collaboration with Taylor Swift on the Red reissue.
